about

“Workers of the World …" was performed with computer, baby
monitor, contact mics, guitar, drum brush, magnets, field recordings, and one chopstick.

I was locked in the on-air console and could only see part of Steve's
head two studios down. This encouraged a feeling of anonymous
distance that was perfect for this piece. Everything was tactile and
stark ... dead siren calls, clangs and howls. Then a strangely warm
(almost) stillness crept in. A lullaby for the vague terrain of a lurking
night and the uneasy beauty of empty streets. You could imagine the
steel loneliness of a radio tower and sense an invisible blanket of radio waves drifting and exploding over a sleeping city. When he was done it felt almost violent to break the silence that was in place during the performance. Steve came up with the title on the spot; it was one of those moments.
